Environment and Climate Change Canada

Environment and Climate Change Canada’s Science Horizons Youth Internship Program (Science Horizons) is part of the Government of Canada’s Youth Employment Strategy (YES), helping young Canadians aged 15 to 30 to gain skills, green job experience, to learn about our natural environment all the while contributing to economic growth in Canada’s environmental sectors.

Science Horizons provides wage subsidies to eligible employers for internships related to the environment. Since 1997, Science Horizons has delivered over 1800 internship opportunities across Canada.

Parks Canada

Parks Canada will hire 400 additional students in 2016-2017 through the Summer Work Experience stream of YES in a number of different jobs ranging from client service and outreach work through its national initiatives, to research and technical jobs.

These summer jobs contribute to Parks Canada's mandate as they help to engage, inform, and serve visitors of Canada's national parks, national marine conservation areas, and national historic sites across Canada.

The work projects are dependent on the opportunities available at specific Parks Canada locations. Students are assigned work that spans a variety of disciplines such as:

-       Informing Canadians about natural and cultural heritage.

-       Science-based jobs alongside scientists, which could include; computer scientists, biologists, ecologists, and park wardens working in resource conservation.

-       Assisting a national park interpreter with a bird watching event for a local group of senior citizens.

-       Collecting data about endangered species by tracking, measuring and releasing animals.

-       Monitoring and measuring conditions in a biosphere plot.

-       Creating a new database to organize information collected during field research.

-       Assisting with the organization of a hiking event.

-       Distributing promotional materials to tourism operators and answering their questions.
