Lake Louise Weekend Shuttle in Banff National Park
Backgrounder
Parks Canada manages one of the finest and most extensive systems of protected natural and cultural heritage areas in the world. The Lake Louise area is the most visited destination in Banff National Park and arguably the most visited Parks Canada managed location in the country, with an average yearly visitation of over two million visitors.
This year, to improve visitor experience and reduce traffic congestion in the Lake Louise area of Banff National Park, Parks Canada is offering a free weekend shuttle service from lower to upper Lake Louise on weekends and holidays starting Canada Day, July 1st to Labour Day, September 5th. The shuttle service departs from the Lake Louise overflow parking lot located 5 km east of Lake Louise and 50 km west of Banff and operates between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. MDT.
Safety is a top priority for Parks Canada. Visitors travelling on Lake Louise Drive should expect delays and heavy traffic volumes. Motorists are asked to watch for traffic flaggers and respect existing road rules and signage. Vehicles blocking access for emergency vehicles and/or impacting traffic flow, will be managed by the appropriate law enforcement agency.
There is no shuttle service to Moraine Lake during the summer; however, Parks Canada will continue to offer a free shuttle service from the Lake Louise overflow parking lot to Moraine Lake on weekends from September 10th to September 25th, 2016 for the WonderFall festival and larch viewing. This shuttle service was initiated in 2013 as a way to improve visitor experience and address traffic congestion in the Moraine Lake area during the fall.
Parks Canada is dedicated to finding a long-term solution to traffic management in the Lake Louise area. Both the Lake Louise and Moraine Lake weekend shuttles provide an interim measure while Parks Canada continues to pursue a long-term transit solution. Developing new and innovative programs and services allows more Canadians, including youth and newcomers, to experience the outdoors and learn about our environment and history.
Canada’s national parks are gateways to nature, adventure, and discovery. Parks Canada encourages visitors to plan ahead and consider visiting upper Lake Louise and Moraine Lake outside of peak hours - early in the morning or in the evening before 9 a.m. and after 7 p.m. Visitors should also consider exploring equally breathtaking areas of the park like the Icefields Parkway or take a gondola tour at the Lake Louise Ski Area that may provide a more relaxing visitor experience during busy holiday weekends.
