Cape Breton Highlands National Park
Cape Breton Highlands National Park is known for its spectacular highlands and ocean scenery, steep cliffs and deep river canyons carved into a forested plateau bordering the Atlantic Ocean. One third of the Cabot Trail, a world-famous scenic highway, runs through the national park. Approximately 175,000 people visit this site per year.
Projects: Bridges, culverts and road rehabilitation on the Cabot Trail
Estimated total: $48.9 M
Projects descriptions: Numerous bridges, culverts and sections of road along the Cabot Trail will undergo repairs and replacements within Cape Breton Highlands National Park. Paving work will continue on sections of French to MacKenzie Mountains. Road realignment work will continue at Corney Brook along with rock stabilization across the Cabot Trail. Bridge replacements at North Aspy (South) River, Grand Anse and MacKenzie’s Brook. Culverts will be replaced at Corney Brook, Grand Anse and Grand Falaise.
Projects: Visitor facilities rehabilitation including trails, day use areas, parking lots and campgrounds
Estimated total: $3.9 M
Projects description: Improvements will be made to the Skyline Trail facilities, parking lot and back loop trail, in addition to the rehabilitation of Middle Head Trail, day use area and Lone Shieling. The Ingonish Administration Parking area will be improved and there will be a review and implementation of the building asset strategy across Cape Breton Highlands National Park.
Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site
Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site is the largest reconstruction project in North America. The original settlement was founded in 1713 by the French and developed over several decades into a thriving center for fishing and trade. The site lay untouched well into modern times, until 1964 when the Fortress began reconstruction as it was in the 18th century. An average of 82,000 people visit this site every year.
Projects: Building optimization strategy, King’s Bastion Barracks repairs, King and Queen Wall and Tunnel and Dauphin Quay Wall study, and other repairs across the site Estimated total: $11.4 M
Projects description: This work will include the repurposing of 14 vacant buildings on site and the rehabilitation of Lartigue House and McLennan Centre. Improvements will be made to the King’s Bastion Barracks including repairs and electrical upgrade. A full review will be conducted for the King and Queen Wall and Tunnel to develop a strategy to stabilize both tunnels. A study will also be completed for the Dauphin Quay Wall to determine an action plan.
Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site
Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site is a unique exhibit complex where displays, the Silver Dart replica and hands-on experiences tell the fascinating life and work of Alexander Graham Bell. Special events such as Harvest Home complement the program of activities offered on this site, which is situated on 10 hectares of land overlooking Baddeck Bay on the Bras d'Or Lakes. The site is visited by approximately 73,000 people each year.

Projects description: This work involves repairs to the roof terrace and windows, as well as the rehabilitation of the parking lot and exterior walkway lighting.
