Government of Canada Commemorates the National Historic Significance of Frank W. Schofield

Today, Parks Canada and the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada, today commemorated the importance of Frank W. Schofield as a person of national historic significance. A special ceremony was held in Guelph, Ontario with members of the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada, the University of Guelph and Ontario Veterinary College, the Schofield Memorial Foundation, and Dr. Chung, former Prime Minister of Korea.
The Government of Canada is committed to connecting Canadians to the significant people, places and events that contributed to our country’s rich and varied history. Dr. Schofield was an outstanding veterinarian whose research and scientific discoveries led to vast improvements in both animal and human health. To this day, the legacy of Dr. Schofield’s many honours and distinctions lives on. Through his scientific, missionary and political work in Korea, he contributed to the democratic development of that country and is recognized there as a patriot.
As we near the 150th anniversary of Confederation in 2017, the Government invites all Canadians to experience and learn more about our environment and our history. Canada’s national parks and historic sites enable Canadians to experience their heritage in a special way and will play a big part in the celebration of Canada 150.

- Frank W. Schofield is the only veterinarian to be recognized as a person of national significance by the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada.

At the time of his retirement from the Ontario Veterinary College, almost 75% of all English speaking veterinarians in Canada had studied under Dr. Schofield.

Dr. Schofield played an important role in documenting the Koreans’ fight for independence and raising awareness of their struggle internationally.

Created in 1919, the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada advises the Minister of Environment and Climate Change regarding the national historic significance of places, people and events that have marked Canada’s history.
