Celebrate Canada 150 with a BioBlitz at PEI National Park
News Release
Join the fun at the PEI National Park BioBlitz June 9-10, 2017!
June 2, 2017 Dalvay, Prince Edward Island Parks Canada Agency
Throughout 2017, Parks Canada is hosting BioBlitz events across the country in support of BioBlitz Canada 150, a Canadian Heritage signature Canada 150 initiative led by the Canadian Wildlife Foundation. BioBlitzes are fun and educational activities that let families and friends team up with scientists to discover and learn about plant and animal species and contribute to their protection.
As we celebrate Canada 150 with free admission to Parks Canada places, the PEI National Park BioBlitz is a great opportunity for families to experience the outdoors and learn more about our environment. From noon on June 9 until noon on June 10, you can take part in the PEI BioBlitz based out of the Brackley-Dalvay section of Prince Edward Island National Park.
At this time of year, many species of plants and critters are at the peak of their activity cycles or at their most visible. This nationwide initiative aims to capture a snapshot of biodiversity across the country on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of Confederation.
Join one of our knowledgeable experts in a guided exploration to discover the plants and animals that call PEI National Park home. From insects and plants, amphibians and eels, to the bats and owls that fly at night, the different ecosystems found in the park are rich in life. For the full schedule of events, check the Event Schedule. Registration for BioBlitz is ongoing at the Dalvay Administration Building (40 Dalvay Crescent). Participants are encouraged to register ahead of time online: pc.gc.ca/pei-bioblitz.
Preserving and promoting ecological integrity is a priority for Parks Canada and the Government of Canada has committed to protecting 17 per cent of land and inland waters, and 10 percent of coastal and marine waters by 2020. Canada 150 offers an opportunity for all citizens to get involved in helping to protect the environment and Canada’s biodiversity.
Please visit the Parks Canada website for a full list of BioBlitz events happening across the country, and make conservation part of your plans for Canada 150. For more information on this special event, and other Canada 150 events and activities, visit the Prince Edward Island National Park website and follow us on Facebook and Twitter.
Over the past two years, BioBlitz participants across the country have discovered one new type of mushroom, eight types of bats, and 33 new plants! What will YOU discover?
