Parks Canada and Cape Breton University Sign Memorandum of Understanding

Organizations share a common interest in advancing research and education

Parks Canada and Cape Breton University announced the formalization of an agreement to work together in advancing research and education in natural and cultural heritage conservation and visitor experience as it relates to Parks Canada’s places on Cape Breton Island. The two organizations signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) at an event today at Cape Breton University, which focused on work experiences and current projects by students and professors who have participated in academic opportunities at Parks Canada’s sites island-wide.

This three-year MOU focuses on enriching opportunities to inspire students, faculty, and Parks Canada staff through creativity and innovation, student mentorship, and community engagement. Parks Canada and Cape Breton University possess a long history of collaboration on research projects and initiatives including the Louisbourg Institute, water quality monitoring at Cape Breton Highlands National Park, Celebrate Women 2016, and the Katharine McLennan project. This MOU encourages collaborative efforts to increase scientific and academic understanding and participation in experiences related to natural and cultural heritage.

Current projects the two organizations are advancing include Mi’kmaq interpretation at the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site, a mobile research and outreach lab working with Cape Breton Highlands National Park, and remote convocations at Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site. This important work, in addition to other projects such as applied theatre and student co-op placements, will continue through the organizations’ respective mandates on education, research, and heritage.
