Gros Morne National Park, 2018 Management Planning

Backgrounder

Gros Morne National Park

Gros Morne National Park is an extraordinary wilderness environment that protects a portion of the Newfoundland Highlands and St. Lawrence Lowlands. With its towering cliffs, dramatic fjord valleys, glacial lakes, coastal bogs and dunes, and highland plateaus, Gros Morne’s landscapes rank among the most spectacular and diverse in Canada. Gros Morne is also a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. In addition to its outstanding natural beauty, its glacier-scoured highlands and spectacular fjords reveal many significant geological features. The rocks here collectively present an illustration of the process of continental drift along the eastern coast of North America. They contribute greatly to the body of knowledge and understanding of plate tectonics and to the geological evolution of ancient mountain belts.

Gros Morne National Park Management Planning

Parks Canada places belong to all Canadians. They represent the very best that Canada has to offer and tell the stories of who we are. A Parks Canada’s management plan helps guide the long-term plans and management priorities at national parks and historic sites, and serves as a key public accountability document for that place. Management plans are strategic in nature, based on a long-term vision, with clear direction for a 10-year period, including measurable objectives and targets to achieve results.

Phase I – Public Engagement: Shaping the Vision

In support of the development of Gros Morne National Park’s management plan, Parks Canada recently launched phase I of public consultation. Indigenous and stakeholder meetings began in July 2018, with online public consultation component available from October 15th to December 14th. Ongoing public and stakeholder meetings will be held until mid-December. Throughout this time, Canadians will be able to provide their input on elements of the vision as well as key issues and opportunities that are relevant to the management of this site.

Phase II – Public Engagement: A Draft Management Plan

A draft management plan will be developed in early 2019, and will be shared with the public for additional review and comment as part of phase II consultation. The draft plan will be available on the Gros Morne National Park webpage and various social media platforms including Facebook (@GrosMorneNP) and twitter (@ParksCanadaNL). A “What We Heard” newsletter will be available online in January 2019 and distributed to local communities near Gros Morne.

Members of the public are invited to contact the park at grosmorne.consultations@pc.gc.ca to request a consultation event within their community or organization.
