Parks Canada announces plan to connect Canadians to nature in Western Newfoundland

August 23, 2019                            Rocky Harbour, NL                       Parks Canada Agency

The management plan for Gros Morne National Park was tabled in Parliament recently. Reviewed every 10 years, management plans are a legislative requirement of the Canada National Parks Act and guide the management of Parks Canada’s places.

Canada’s national parks are gateways to nature, adventure, and discovery.

The new plan for Gros Morne National Park outlines the following key objectives:

· Protecting a treasured landscape
- ensure that the natural and cultural values of Gros Morne National Park, including those critical to its UNESCO World Heritage Site designation, are protected for the benefit of current and future generations.

· Achieving results together
- recognizing that Gros Morne National Park is vital, not only to the protection of natural and cultural resources within its boundaries, but also to the livelihoods and lifestyles of local communities, and contributes significantly to the prosperity and sustainability of the region.

· Revitalizing visitor experience
- focusing on revitalizing visitor facilities and programming in collaboration with local communities and stakeholders.

The plan was developed through public consultation and based on input from local residents and organizations, visitors, stakeholders, partners, and Indigenous communities of Newfoundland and Labrador. Through this management plan, Parks Canada is meeting its promise to protect and present Canada’s natural heritage while also providing an opportunity for Canadians to experience and discover our environment in new and exciting ways.

Admission is free for youth 17 and under to all Parks Canada’s places. Parks Canada’s places are a great way for youth to experience the outdoors and learn more about our environment and history. By encouraging Canadians to visit their national parks, historic sites, and marine conservation areas, and providing them with the information and means to enjoy them, Parks Canada enables more Canadians to experience the outdoors and learn about our heritage.
