Chambly Canal National Historic Site

Located on the west bank of the Richelieu River, 20 kilometres southeast of Montreal, the Chambly Canal extends for about 20 kilometres between the municipalities of Saint‑Jean-sur-Richelieu and Chambly. A true oasis for cycling, boating and outdoor enthusiasts, the Chambly Canal offers moments of pure relaxation in an environment shaped by 175 years of history. In addition, its nine locks and a bridge are now manually operated, as they were when the Canal opened in 1843.

Investing in federal infrastructure works

Project name:
Chambly Canal - Rehabilitation of the Chambly Jetty

Project description: Since its funding was announced in 2018, the Chambly Jetty has been completely rebuilt to restore access to users while ensuring their safety and maintaining recreational activities.

The work included the following features: a slight increase in height, steel sheet piling on the north, east and west facades, a concrete cope wall, concrete filling of steel sheet piling facades, as well as a structural slab. The use of durable materials such as concrete will give the structure a minimum service life of 50 years. The lay-to wharves can now be installed before the boating season each year.

Quality street furniture were also installed, including lamp posts with decorative aluminum details and LED lighting, benches with and without backs, railings made of galvanized steel pipes, waste and recycling bins, bike racks, planters, and Adirondack chairs.

Parks Canada is carrying out infrastructure work at sites such as the Chambly Canal National Historic Site to ensure safe, high-quality visitor experiences by improving heritage assets, visitor facilities, waterways and roads located in national historic sites, national parks and national marine conservation areas.
