On March 14, 2023, the Honourable Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Environment and Climate Change and Minister responsible for Parks Canada, announced the appointment of a distinguished Canadian to the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada (HSMBC):

 


Michael Philpott, Newfoundland and Labrador

Michael Philpott works as a consultant with Human Space where he is primarily responsible for Heritage for All, a multi-year research project examining and making recommendations with respect to the accessibility of federal heritage buildings. He previously worked for six years as a heritage officer (preservation) with the Heritage Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador, where he administered the organization’s designation, restoration funding, and built heritage documentation programs.

Mr. Philpott has coordinated and provided training in conservation and research practices and has written for a variety of audiences and on topics of architecture, material culture, and urban planning. He was a member of the City of St. John’s first Built Heritage Experts Panel, is a board member of the Newfoundland and Labrador Historic Trust, and has volunteered with a number of other heritage and urban issues-based organizations.

He holds a bachelor of arts (honours) from Memorial University and a bachelor of environmental design studies (architecture) from Dalhousie University.
