Symptoms of Giardia infection
The most common symptoms of Giardia infection include:
- gas
- diarrhea
- weight loss
- dehydration
- stomach cramps or pain
- nausea or upset stomach
These symptoms usually appear 1 to 3 weeks after infection and usually last 2 to 6 weeks.
Some people may not show any symptoms of illness.
What to do if you become ill
Contact your health care provider if you have any of these symptoms and think you have Giardia infection. Mention if you have been exposed to:
- an infected or potentially infected animal, such as pets or livestock
- food, water or feces that may have been contaminated by parasites
Your health care provider can:
- monitor your illness
- prescribe appropriate treatment
If you have diarrhea, drink plenty of water or fluids to prevent dehydration. Children and people with weakened immune systems may experience more severe symptoms.
