Minister Goodale thanks Howard Sapers for his work as Correctional Investigator of Canada

Statement

Ottawa, November 8, 2016 – Today, the Honourable Ralph Goodale, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, issued the following statement on the resignation of Howard Sapers as the Correctional Investigator of Canada:

“I would like to thank Mr. Sapers for more than 12 years of dedicated service advocating for a sound, modern correctional system that strives for effective rehabilitation while ensuring the safety of the public, the staff and offenders. In his role as the Correctional Investigator of Canada, Mr. Sapers’ experience and tireless efforts have contributed to improving the federal correctional system and have advanced issues such as mental health in corrections, preventing deaths in custody and the special needs of Indigenous offenders.  I wish him luck with his future endeavours.

The Correctional Investigator contributes to public safety by identifying issues of concern within the federal correctional system and proposing solutions that support the safe, secure and humane custody of offenders.

Information on a new Correctional Investigator of Canada will be shared in due course.”
