Building modern, reliable public infrastructure and creating jobs

July 12, 2017 - Latchford, Ontario - Public Services and Procurement Canada

The Government of Canada has completed two major public infrastructure dam replacement projects, supporting the economic prosperity of the northern Ottawa River region. These replacement projects demonstrate the Government’s commitment to making significant improvements that benefit the local communities and generate economic benefits for the middle class.

On behalf of the Government of Canada, Anthony Rota, Member of Parliament for Nipissing–Timiskaming, tomorrow will announce the completion and opening of the new Latchford Dam, located on the shores of Bay Lake and the Montreal River in the Timiskaming District of Ontario. Joined by the Mayor of Latchford, His Worship George Lefebvre, Member of Parliament Rota will highlight the Government of Canada’s commitment to safe, modern and reliable public infrastructure assets. The community of Latchford will benefit from a new dam that regulates water levels in the area. It also has a multi-purpose passage that includes fishing areas and allows all terrain vehicles and snowmobiles to cross from one side of the river to the other.

In addition, Member of Parliament Rota will announce the completion of the dam replacement project of the Ontario portion of the Timiskaming Dam Complex, located alongside Long Sault Island on the Ottawa River. The design work for the replacement project of the Quebec portion of this complex is also currently underway. An engineering design contract was awarded to Tetra Tech QI Inc. in September 2016. Completion of this project is expected in late 2019.
