Government of Canada supports environmental research through Build in Canada Innovation Program

Through the Build in Canada Innovation Program, the Government of Canada is investing in Canadian innovations to create inclusive and sustainable economic growth for communities across Canada.
On behalf of Public Services and Procurement Canada, Terry Beech, Member of Parliament for Burnaby North–Seymour and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard, today announced that the Government of Canada is investing in a made-in-Canada innovation designed to collect and preserve sealed samples of particles from water.
Cellula Robotics Ltd. has received a $612,202 contract for its Cetor3000 sampler. This innovative subsea device collects samples of plankton and suspended sediments from previously unattainable ocean depths. In addition to its ability to work at greater depths, the Cetor3000 captures more samples per use and is able to preserve them for a long period of time, which facilitates water quality assessments and environmental research.
The innovation will be tested at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, which was established by the Government of Canada in 1962 and is now one of the world’s premier institutes for multi-disciplinary ocean research.
This investment was made through the Build in Canada Innovation Program, which helps Canadian innovators land their first sale and get their innovations tested by the Government of Canada. This program is just one of the many ways the Government of Canada supports innovation and small and medium-sized businesses across Canada.

The Cetor3000 sampler can be deployed in oceans and lakes to collect and preserve up to 600 independently sealed samples. It can be triggered manually or autonomously and can operate without service for up to six months.
In addition to collecting samples of solid particles transported by flowing water, the Cetor3000 can, through the detection of specific microorganisms, perform detailed assessments of marine eco-systems.
Cellula Robotics Ltd. is a world-leading engineering solutions company that specializes in the design and production of seafloor intervention and subsea robotic systems.
More than 240 contracts have been awarded under the Build in Canada Innovation Program, including 28 in British Columbia, worth more $10 million.
More than $100 million has been awarded in contracts since the Build in Canada Innovation Program began in 2010.
