Naval large tugs
The naval large tug (NLT) vessels will replace the Royal Canadian Navy’s 5 civilian-crewed Glen-class large tugs and 2 Fire-class rescue boats. These vessels currently operate in His Majesty’s Canadian (HMC) Dockyard Halifax in Nova Scotia and HMC Dockyard Esquimalt in British Columbia.

Progress of the project
- A contract for 4 vessels was awarded in April 2019
- Construction of the first vessel began in September 2020
- The first 2 NLTs, Canadian Forces Auxiliary Vessel (CFAV) Haro and CFAV Barkerville, were delivered to the Royal Canadian Navy in August 2024
- The third NLT, CFAV Canso, was delivered in January 2026
- The contract was amended in December 2025 to include NLTs 5 and 6
The year ahead
Construction continues on the fourth NLT, CFAV Stella Maris, which is scheduled for delivery in November 2026.
