Interacting with the Canadian Security Intelligence Service on Social Media

This notice explains how the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) interacts with the public on social media platforms. This notice also informs users of their rights and obligations when interacting with us via social media.

Your engagement with CSIS via social media is in part governed by the Terms of Service/Use of the relevant third-party social media platform providers, as well as the following Terms and Conditions. CSIS has no control over the social media platform providers’ Terms of Service/Use, but you are strongly encouraged to read the most current version in addition to those that follow.

Please note: These social media accounts are not to be contacted for emergencies, as the accounts are not monitored at all times. You should call 9-1-1 to report an emergency or crime. For less urgent emergencies, please call the 10-digit number for your local police, fire, or health services.

Content and frequency

CSIS uses its social media accounts as an alternative method of sharing the content posted on its website and interacting with its stakeholders. By following CSIS social media accounts (by "following," "liking," or "subscribing," etc.), you can expect to receive information, which may include:

CSIS will occasionally share content that we believe is of value to its audience, and is most often related to the safety and security of Canadians.

Social media platforms and their computer servers are managed by a third party, CSIS social media accounts are subject to downtime that may be out of the organization’s control. CSIS accepts no responsibility for platforms becoming unresponsive or unavailable.

Links to other websites and ads

CSIS social media accounts may post or display links or ads for websites that are not under the control of CSIS. These links are provided solely for the convenience of users. Neither CSIS nor the Government of Canada is responsible for the information found through these links or ads, nor does it endorse the sites or their content.

Following, “liking” and subscribing

CSIS’ decision to follow, “like,” or subscribe to another social media account does not imply an endorsement of that account, channel, page, or site, nor does sharing (re-tweeting, reposting, or linking to) content from another user.

Comments and interaction

CSIS will read comments and participate in discussions where appropriate. Your comments and contributions must be relevant and respectful.

CSIS will not engage in partisan or political issues, nor respond to questions that violate these Terms and Conditions.

CSIS reserves the right to report users and/or their comments and contributions to third-party social media service providers to prevent or remove the posting of content that is contrary to these Terms and Conditions, or to the Terms of Service/Use of the third-party social media platform.

Accessibility of social media platforms

Social media platforms are third-party service providers and are not bound by Government of Canada policies for Web accessibility.

Copyright

Information posted by CSIS is subject to the Copyright Act.

Privacy

CSIS social media accounts are not Government of Canada websites and only represent CSIS’ presence on third-party service providers. Users are encouraged to read all such third-party service providers' privacy policies, including XFacebookLinkedIn, and YouTube.

All information shared with CSIS on its social media accounts, such as replies, comments, and direct messages, is subject to the provisions of the Access to Information Act and the Privacy Act. This means that any such information that is shared with CSIS may be requested under these acts. Users are advised not to share any personal information, including home addresses and telephone numbers.

Official languages

Many social media platforms have multiple language options and provide instructions on how to set your preferences. CSIS respects the Official Languages Act and is committed to ensuring that its information is available in French and English and that both versions are of equal quality.

CSIS may share links that direct users to sites of organizations or other entities that are not subject to the Official Languages Act and are available only in the language(s) in which they are written. When content is available in only one language, CSIS will make an effort to provide similar content in the other official language.
