Statement from the CSIS Director on SIRC Annual Report
Ottawa, October 5, 2017 – Today, the Honourable Ralph Goodale, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, tabled the Security Intelligence Review Committee (SIRC) Annual Report entitled Accelerating Accountability in the House of Commons.
Following the tabling, the Director of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS), David Vigneault, issued the following statement:
“In our current threat environment, national security and intelligence issues are often at the forefront of public discussion. Canadians rightly want to ensure that their security and intelligence agencies are doing everything they can to protect their country, and doing so in a manner consistent with Canadian law, Ministerial Direction, and Canadian values.
SIRC’s Annual Report to Parliament plays a crucial role in providing Canadians with an understanding of the CSIS operations. Its recommendations help to shape and improve CSIS policies and practices.
CSIS recognizes the importance of independent review in maintaining Canadians’ trust in Canada’s national security. To that end, we recognize the tremendous role the Security Intelligence Review committee (SIRC) has played in maintaining the credibility of CSIS.
Review, accountability and transparency are fundamental principles of any open, democratic society and the men and women of CSIS dedicate their careers to uphold these values.”
