Statement by the Director of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) on the publication of the CSIS Code of Conduct

Statement

Ottawa, November, 5, 2020 – The Director of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS), David Vigneault, issued the following statement today regarding the publication of the CSIS Code of Conduct:

“Protecting Canada’s national security and that of its citizens is a critical job – and how we conduct ourselves and interact in the workplace is just as important. Today we mark an important step in our commitment to providing a healthy and respectful workplace for all of our employees by publishing the CSIS Code of Conduct. At the core of our achievements are the people of CSIS and ensuring that all our colleagues are valued for their different paths and experiences is the only way to succeed in our mission.

Our employees are at the heart of this new Code of Conduct. I am proud that it was developed following extensive consultation across the organization to give every employee an opportunity to directly contribute to its development. In addition to being a condition of employment, the CSIS Code of Conduct clearly articulates what is expected of employees and ensures accountability for fostering a respectful workplace by building it into the performance evaluations of every employee.

It puts forward the values we are committed to uphold in our work environment: respect for people, respect for democracy, integrity, stewardship and excellence.

Through a diverse workforce and a diversity of thought, CSIS employees will grow their understanding of Canadians and the communities it protects. In any decision that we make it is expected that we consider, discuss and challenge ourselves to uphold these values in the workplace and in the work we do for Canadians.”
