This process supports the Government of Canada’s effort to better address the public safety and policing needs of Indigenous communities across Canada.

Why

Through the First Nations Policing Program (FNPP), the Government of Canada provides funding to support policing services that are professional, dedicated and responsive to the First Nation and Inuit communities they serve. Much has changed in the policing world since the 1990s, but the First Nations Policing Policy, which guides the FNPP, has not been updated since 1996. Through this engagement process, the Government of Canada wanted to hear from those most closely associated with policing in Indigenous communities , on how it could continue to effectively support Indigenous policing to address public safety challenges into the future.

Who

This engagement process provided opportunities for Indigenous communities, provincial and territorial governments, Indigenous organizations, police services, police associations, police board/commission members and subject-matter experts to share their knowledge and insights.

What

The data from this engagement process will help inform the Government of Canada next steps on key issues related to policing in Indigenous communities in Canada.

Reporting to Canadians

A full report on all engagement activities will be released early in 2017, as well as a detailed report on the online survey.
