Behind the frost: How SSC keeps Winterlude’s digital presence solid
Dave Savard, one of Shared Services Canada’s (SSC) directors responsible for storage and file services, spends his winters making sure nothing digital ever freezes. He and his team keep the storage systems behind Winterlude’s digital content running smoothly and reliably. Whenever any calendar, alert or other data depends on SSC-managed storage, his team is there to make it work for Canada.
What you see and what you don’t
Winterlude’s website may look simple from the outside, but behind Canada’s Capital Region’s winter festival is a complex digital chain—with links that include storage, network, databases and web servers. Each year, teams across SSC work behind the scenes to ensure every link in the chain stays secure and available.
Everything visitors see online—event schedules, weather updates or safety alerts—depends on data stored on Canadian Heritage servers supported by SSC. During the festival, the website is the primary source of information for attendees, media, partners and emergency teams. If any link in the chain fails, Canadians could get wrong information, miss events or face safety risks.
That’s where Dave’s team comes in.
The team behind the scenes
Dave and his team support and maintain the storage environment that make the website’s content possible, including:
- the Canadian Heritage application servers that generate the event calendar
- the storage systems that hold real-time data feeds and updates
These systems face huge traffic spikes, heavy media attention and time-sensitive winter weather updates. SSC monitors the storage, blocks threats and keeps everything running smoothly, ensuring Canadians always get the latest information. If the website servers go down, Dave and team step in to get it back online and keep the chain strong.
Always on, always ready
Every year, SSC activates a Heightened Awareness Window to provide immediate incident response and ensure a prompt restoration of service availability. This allows the team to quickly restore any storage or server issues affecting Canadian Heritage systems and feeds that may arise during the festival.
More than just a calendar
“Keeping a calendar online may sound simple,” says Dave, “but behind the scenes, it’s a carefully choreographed operation.” Teams across SSC make sure every piece works together seamlessly:
- applications generate the schedule run without a hitch
- databases deliver instant updates
- storage systems stay available 24/7
- surges in network traffic are handled smoothly
Quiet work, big impact
All this matters so visitors can easily check when the ice sculptures and snow slides are open.
“Most government work happens behind the scenes,” says Dave. “But Winterlude shows how SSC support doesn’t just keep systems safe—it helps bring people together for something joyful and uniquely Canadian. It’s a privilege to play just a small part in that.”
The technology behind Winterlude may look effortless, but the digital reliability behind it is anything but.
“Our role isn’t flashy—and it isn’t meant to be,” continues Dave. “It’s about serving Canadians by making sure the systems they rely on are stable, secure and seamless, so the only thing they notice is the experience itself. Whether it’s enabling the magic of Winterlude or the smooth operation of government services—it’s what we do!”
