CanAI Garage— Unlocking the future with Canada’s brightest minds
When new challenges arise, Shared Services Canada’s (SSC) CanAI Garage Program doesn’t just face them—we innovate through them. And who’s at the heart of this program? Students.
We are teaming up with these visionary minds to adopt and develop new, innovative technologies in a way that protects the Government of Canada’s (GC) values, strengthens our services and empowers our employees.
Revved up and ready
The CanAI Garage Program is a coast-to-coast-to coast collaboration fuelled by co-op students across four regional hubs in British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Newfoundland and Labrador. We are uniting federal and provincial governments with academic institutions to build artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities for digital transformation.
Together, we’re crafting AI solutions that align with government values, security needs and real-world challenges—all while nurturing the next wave of AI talent. It’s innovation in action across Canada!
"Through the CanAI Garage, we are tackling real, hard-hitting challenges affecting all levels of government. By working with students and their fresh perspectives, we are able to think even further outside the box to create the most innovative solutions."
Full throttle: Projects that accelerate impact
From fraud detection to predictive maintenance, the CanAI Garage is firing on all cylinders. Here’s a peek at some of the innovative projects under our hood to transform government operations.
Validating Dayforce human resources (HR) and pay solution data
To support the transition to Dayforce, the GC’s new HR and pay platform, Public Services and Procurement Canada partnered with the CanAI Garage. A team of experts and students jumped into action, developing a proof of concept to streamline early data validation, reduce errors and simplify pre-submission data checks.
While it’s not a production tool, the prototype could inspire future human-centred AI solutions that strengthen HR and pay processes across government. Cutting complexity and tightening workflows ensures wins all around!
AI tackles student aid fraud
In Saskatchewan, we’re developing a prototype to help spot errors and potential misrepresentation in student aid program applications. Our AI tool acts like a detective, flagging anything incorrect or suspicious for further review—saving time, money and resources while keeping the system fair and efficient.
Each of these projects is designed to be reusable with responsible, ethical and secure AI built-in at every step.
The CanAI Garage isn’t just solving problems—we’re transforming how governments work with AI, one innovative solution at a time.
It’s what we do.
