Learning together: AI in action across the public service

Learning together: AI in action across the public service

During Learning Week on AI, public servants discovered how to use secure, responsible AI tools like CANChat to modernize services and better serve Canadians.

We came to Learning Week on Artificial Intelligence (May 25 to 29, 2026) with a clear objective: demystify AI for the federal public service and demonstrate its secure, responsible and impactful applications. Delivered entirely virtually, the week included live sessions from the Canada School of Public Service (CSPS) along with videos, articles and curated courses. The result was a flexible learning experience that met people where they are.

Throughout the week, curiosity evolved into momentum. Over 3,000 registered participants, plus thousands of web visitors, moved beyond exploring what AI is to how it could improve their work, support decision-making and deliver better services for Canadians. This shift—from awareness to application—is where real transformation begins.

Advancing AI adoption with secure foundations

During the event led by Shared Services Canada (SSC), we showcased how we’re advancing the Government of Canada’s (GC) adoption of AI through our AI Program (available only on the GC network). We also highlighted how secure, sovereign AI foundations are enabling trusted solutions across the public service. Central to this is CANChat, a generative AI tool made for the GC that helps employees work more efficiently, while safeguarding information and maintaining public trust.

We demonstrated how CANChat and other GC AI initiatives are already supporting policy analysis, communications, project management and service delivery. These practical and evolving tools are built to enhance productivity and strengthen how we serve Canadians every day. There was even a sneak peek of the Canadian Sovereign AI Platform, an AI ecosystem that transforms how government delivers services while maintaining sovereignty, accountability and public trust.

A collective step forward

As presenter Olesia Kazantseva noted:

The AI Governance Framework ensures AI innovation at SSC remains secure, accountable, transparent and sustainable, while enabling SSC to adopt and implement AI systems in a responsible manner.

Her words underscored both the pace of advancement and the importance of thoughtful implementation.

The session also focused on building confidence, guiding employees on using generative AI tools responsibly today, while preparing for more advanced, agentic systems in the future.

The response reflected a shared sense of possibility. One participant captured it well:

This event was very informative and interesting. It provided a thorough and clear overview in the developments in AI in the public service. I am excited for what the future holds for the public service using AI.

Learning Week on AI was more than a series of activities. It was a collective step forward. At SSC, we’re grateful to the CSPS for their collaboration in bringing this event to life. We’re proud to empower the public service with the tools, knowledge and foundations needed to harness AI in ways that are secure, responsible and centred on Canadians. It’s what we do.
