Space technologies to bolster Canadian sovereignty and resilience

News release

Longueuil, Quebec, October 1, 2025 — As the global space economy undergoes rapid transformation – marked by accelerated innovation, new international players, and a growing emphasis on national security – Canada is taking steps to ensure its space sector remains competitive, resilient, and aligned with the priorities of Canadians.

This week, during the International Astronautical Congress, Lisa Campbell, President of the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), announced that the CSA is awarding $13.2 million to support 19 projects led by 17 Canadian companies and research organizations from across the country to support the development of space technologies. Many of these technologies are dual-use, meaning they are applicable to both civilian and defence needs and can help equip Canada with the cutting-edge capabilities to meet evolving security challenges.

From satellite communications and artificial intelligence to lunar mobility systems and next-generation propulsion systems, the projects will help organizations advance their space technologies, strengthen their R&D capabilities, and ultimately expand their commercial potential. These innovations open new opportunities for Canada's space sector to diversify its markets, contribute to Canada's economy and build critical domestic capabilities.
