Statement from the Honourable Marc Garneau, Minister of Transport on departmental action to support Government of Canada flood efforts

“The Government of Canada is responding to recent flooding in Canada.
“My thoughts are with the thousands of families in hundreds of communities affected by flood water in various regions of the country. Transport Canada, in coordination with other federal departments such as the Department of National Defence, Public Safety Canada, and the Canadian Coast Guard is making its resources and assets available as part of the emergency response, including aircraft in its National Aerial Surveillance Program.
“Transport Canada is closely monitoring water levels in affected areas for bridge clearance related to commercial and ferry operations, has imposed vessel speed restrictions on affected waterways, and is dispatching marine safety inspectors as required. All pleasure craft are reminded to stay away from flooding areas as submerged hazards pose a safety risk to boating operations.
“In addition, the department is expediting approvals for police and emergency service drone use over flooding areas. Members of the media using drones and recreational drone users are reminded that a Special Flight Operating Certificate (SFOC) is needed for drone use, and are asked to keep away from police and emergency services activities.
“Transport Canada is continuing to monitor the situation, and as part of the whole-of-Government response, will target its efforts in affected areas as required, and will continue to coordinate with federal partners.”
