Minister Garneau tables final report from Railway Safety Act Review Panel

The Honourable Marc Garneau, Minister of Transport, issued the following statement today:

“In April 2017, I launched the statutory review of Canada's Railway Safety Act a year ahead of schedule as part of my ongoing commitment improving rail safety. I received the final report from the Railway Safety Act Review Panel as scheduled on April 30, 2018, and have tabled it today.

“The statutory review was launched to ensure this main piece of legislation governing rail safety in Canada continues to uphold the best interests of Canadians.

“The review involved extensive consultations, including a broad online consultation as well as targeted roundtables across the country. This gave all interested parties, including industry, communities and the public, the opportunity to share their views.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank Richard Paton, as Panel Chair lead, and Vice-Chairs Brenda Eaton and Pauline Quinlan, for their support on this important review. I would also like to express my gratitude to all those who provided thought-provoking input during the Panel's public consultations and roundtables.

“Transport Canada is reviewing the Panel's recommendations. The findings from this Review will help our government continue to strengthen rail safety.

“I will also host a roundtable on the Report’s findings to seek the views of stakeholders, who were selected to represent the range of interests of those who participated in the review process, in order to support the implementation of recommendations stemming from the Railway Safety Act Review.”
