2007-10-16 - Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Ontario Family Day

October 16, 2007

To: Compensation Managers
Directors /Chiefs Labour Relations

The purpose of this bulletin is to advise departments of the decision by different provinces to enact a new statutory holiday, Family Day, to be observed on the third Monday of February.

Public service collective agreements provide for eleven (11) designated paid holidays, including a day in the opinion of the Employer to be a provincial or civic holiday. Currently, the Civic Holiday which falls on the first Monday in August has been recognized as the provincial holiday for these provinces. Despite the addition of the Family Day in certain provinces, to be celebrated the 3rd Monday of February, our collective agreements do not provide for a second provincial holiday. Consequently, the day to be recognized will remain the Civic Holiday celebrated on the 1st Monday of August.

Departmental Compensation and Labour Relations Managers should direct any questions that they may have to the appropriate departmental corporate official who, if need be, can contact the appropriate officers at the Treasury Board Secretariat.
