2021-22 GC Web Analytics Awards: Recognizing excellence, results and impact
By: Principal Publisher at Service Canada
This fall, the Principal Publisher Analytics Services team hosted the first-ever ceremony for the GC Web Analytics Awards (accessible only on the Government of Canada network). Attributed once per fiscal year, the awards highlight the vital work of web analytics practitioners in data storytelling, problem solving, and producing insights, impact, and transformation across the government.
Web analytics is the collection and analysis of website data – the information that tells us how Canadians are using Government of Canada websites and if they are able to find, understand and act on information about government priorities, programs and services. These insights then drive strategies to improve the user’s experience and achieve results for the #GC.
Five winners were selected for the 2021-22 GC Web Analytics Awards. While the selected winners highlight some of the exceptional work submitted through the nomination process, we know that web analytics teams across the public service have made a difference in the lives of Canadians, clients, and stakeholders.
With that, a special congratulations goes out to all of the winners!
2021-2022 GC Web Analytics Awards winners
Lands & Minerals Sector audience research (project)
Project members: Ashley Brasfield, Carli Rosenbaum, Emma Morris, Krista Charbonneau, Scott Connery
The Land & Minerals Sector (LMS) audience research project by Natural Resources Canada made it possible to understand the key audiences for LMS in order to be able to respond to the communication challenges facing the sector. Using qualitative data and the web exit survey, the members of this project were able to obtain many positive results allowing the establishment of appropriate strategies to achieve the communication objectives of the sector. This project plays a key role in modernizing the content of the LMS site.
Miranda Charles (individual)
Over the past year, Miranda Charles has demonstrated an interest in the field of analytics and worked extremely hard to gain enough knowledge to compile a certain amount of data in order to provide the Office of the Taxpayer’s Ombudsman's awareness plan with a data-driven approach to better target areas of engagement. Her work allowed her to make the necessary recommendations on the demographics to target and she contributed to the success of the communications team.
Newsletter for the new Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions (CED) site (project)
Project members: Charles Cardinal, Jacinthe Croisetière
Jacinthe Croisetière and Charles Cardinal both conducted an in-depth analysis of the data related to the newsletter subscription on the new CED site following the discovery of problematic data. Their collaboration made it possible to identify several problems, analyze their sources and above all find and implement numerous solutions, increasing the email confirmation rate by 21% in 2 months.
Page analytics tool (project)
Project members: Adam Monsour, Anthony Debassige, Gil Cote, Hamza Belal Aburaneh, Kole Krstev, Marc Viau, Shawn Arsenault, Ryan Hyma
In 2020, the collaboration between the Canada Revenue Agency, Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat and Principal Publisher at Service Canada resulted in the creation of the Page analytics tool. This tool allows anyone to get useful data about Canada.ca URLs. The creation of this tool advances the accessibility of analytical data so that people can make the best decisions possible to improve Canada.ca's web presence. It has also reduced the rate of basic requests, allowing specialists in the analytical field to devote more time to projects that require a large part of their attention.
Philippe Garcia-Duchesne (individual)
Philippe Garcia-Duschene led several performance evaluations for the Treasury Board Secretariat (TBS), but he is recognized today for his excellent work in creating and developing a tool that allowed TBS to better define and measure the department's communication activities: the Metrix. His project is recognized within the department as a significant step forward for digital communications. This tool is the result of combining multiple data sources from different platforms and channels combined in Power BI.
Thank you to our web analytics community for all you do to transform data into intelligent insights and action!
