17 Wing is located at Canadian Forces Base Winnipeg and is under the operational command of 2 Canadian Air Division.
17 Wing generates, delivers and sustains air missions in support of the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) mandate, and provides support to Lodger Units and the CAF. It provides ab initio aircrew training, specialized education and aircrew environmental skills training.
As a support base, 17 Wing provides administrative, operational, and logistical support to more than 113 units at 35 sites and 10 armouries across an extended geographical area. 17 Wing also supports NORAD fighter operations as a Deployed Operations Base for the CF-18 Hornets as required.17 Wing proudly supports both 1 and 2 Canadian Air Divisions as lodger units.
RCAF Station Winnipeg officially opened in April 1925 - one of the first Air Force Bases in Canada. During World War II, RCAF Station Winnipeg became a major part of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. The 402 “City of Winnipeg” Squadron has been based in Winnipeg since 1932. 1994 saw the arrival of 435 Transport and Rescue Squadron, and in 1998 support of Detachment Dundurn in Saskatchewan was moved to 17 Wing. In 2017, 17 Wing was realigned under 2 Canadian Air Division.
