8 Squadron of the 37 Signal Regiment traces its lineage through two key predecessor units: 727 Communication Squadron and 728 Communication Squadron, both based in St. John’s, Newfoundland. The story begins with 727 Communication Squadron, a Regular Force unit that operated out of Canadian Forces Station (CFS) St. John’s in Pleasantville, a site with military roots dating back to 1750. In the early 1970s, as part of a broader initiative to expand Reserve communications capabilities, Canadian Forces Communications Command approved the creation of a Reserve unit to augment 727
This led to the formation of 728 (St. John’s) Communication Squadron on 2 April 1974. They operated alongside 727 in Pleasantville, benefiting from the site's rich military heritage and proximity to Regular Force resources. In May 2012, 728 Communication Squadron was amalgamated with 722 Communication Squadron (Saint John, NB) to form the 37 Signal Regiment, with 728 becoming 8 Squadron within the new structure. Today, 8 Squadron is co-located with the Regimental Headquarters at the Surgeon Lieutenant-Commander W. Anthony Paddon Building in St. John’s, continuing its legacy of providing combat-capable signallers and communications support to the Canadian Armed Forces.
Based in Saint John New Brunswick, 2 squadron's lineage can be traced back to 25 March 1904 giving it claim to the oldest signals squadron in the Commonwealth, and as such its unofficial motto is "Primus Inter Pares" (First Among Equals).
