Accessing After Hours Care

While the clinic is closed, personnel requiring urgent medical attention should report to the nearest civilian medical facility.

Personnel are required to present their Blue Cross card and Military ID.

Members are encouraged to call New Brunswick Tele-Care with after-hours questions relating to health information or accessing medical care after hours by dialing 811.

Care Delivery Unit (CDU)

Your CDU is your clinic—it’s an interdisciplinary team of physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, and medical technicians that work together to deliver the best care possible. This team provides sick parade services, medical appointments, periodic health assessments, and referrals to specialist services, including mental health.

Periodic Health Assessments

All CAF personnel are reminded that it is a member’s responsibility to book routine medicals 3-4 months in advance of their medical category expiration. For personnel under the age of 40 the requirement is every 5 years, and for those over the age of 40 the requirement is every 2 years. Those with specialist occupational requirements such as divers and flight crew require annual verification.

Booked Appointments

When booking your appointment, be sure to confirm your personal contact information. Should you need to cancel or rebook an appointment, 48 hours notification is required.

Missed appointments are costly to DND and result in a direct operational impact to those awaiting similar medical services. If a member is not present for their appointment, their Unit will be notified.

Surgery

If have been seen by a specialist and you are scheduled for a surgery, you must contact your CDU as early as possible to arrange an appointment with your Primary Care Nurse (PCN). At this appointment you will discuss the general surgical process, including medical care, associated services and administrative processes such as sick leave and return to duty.

Case Management

Nurse Case Managers are part of your healthcare team. Their role is, to help members coordinate complex medical needs as well as their transition to civilian healthcare, civilian life and/or return to work. Members are referred to Case Management by their CDU clinician.

Physiotherapy

The Physiotherapy Team provides assessment, education, and treatment to personnel with musculoskeletal impairments and functional limitations. Members with recent injuries/conditions can be seen by a Physiotherapist through the walk-in clinic, or they can be referred by their clinician.

Community Health Nurse

The Community Health Nurse (CHN) provides education and treatment for a variety of conditions including diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity and sexually transmitted infections. The CHN also delivers various routine medications via injection.

Mental Health

The 42 CF Health Services Mental Health Department consists of the General Mental Health Team and the Operational Trauma and Stress Support Centre which operate out of 75 Restigouche Road North and the Psychosocial Team located in Building A-337.

Our team consists of Addiction Counsellors, Chaplains, Mental Health Nurses, Psychiatrists, Psychologists and Social Workers. We also can access Occupational Therapists in the community.

CAF Mental Health Services delivery is provided confidentially and made through a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to ensure that Regular and Reserve Force members receive the psychological, emotional, and spiritual services that they need. To ensure quality mental health care for all soldiers, family members can at times be included in their treatment.

Services available to members include screening, assessment and diagnosis of mental health conditions; brief supportive counselling; psychoeducation; couple’s therapy; individual psychotherapy (various evidence-based modalities); addictions treatment and medication management. Our department also supports operations and members through pre/post deployment screenings; OUTCAN screenings; semi-isolated/isolated posting screenings and social work reports.

Access to Mental Health Services can be done through self-referrals by presenting to the walk-in clinic at 42 Health Services Centre (building A-47) or by referrals from medical staff. Certain services (Social Work Reports for Compassionate Status or Posting, etc.) must be requested by Unit Commanding Officers/supervisors.

Psychosocial Services

  • Short term therapy for symptoms related to stressors, anger management, relationship issues, mild depressive and anxiety symptoms.
  • No referral required.

  • Psychiatry for assessments and medication management.
  • Therapy for treatment of mental health conditions.
