Global Spatial Technology Solutions

Global Spatial Technology Solutions (GSTS) is commercializing a proprietary platform that supports optimisation, risk and compliance management in the maritime sector, similar to Global Air Traffic Control for Ships. It helps ports, shipping lines and pilotage authorities make smarter, safer decisions that are more cost effective and better for the environment.

Maritime surveillance satellites

The origins of GSTS can be traced back more than 15 years when global events raised security and climate change concerns. In a security-heightened and globally connected world, it suddenly became more important than ever for countries to have the ability to track all ships around the world at all times.

GSTS founders were involved in a rush to design, build, and launch space satellites – which today provide vast amounts of data from hundreds of satellites orbiting Earth enhancing safety, security and supply chain resilience while reducing emissions in the maritime sector.

Artificial Intelligence and Big Data analytics

GSTS formed to develop its flagship product OCIANA™, a solution that uses Artificial Intelligence and Big Data analytics on massive datasets harvested from ocean, weather, and port activity to provide real-time decision-making intelligence for ports, terminal operators, shipping lines, logistics companies, and security organizations.

For example, OCIANA™ can help commercial users plan ship traffic around natural disasters and endangered species. Government and defence users can detect smuggling, illegal fishing operation, and hostile intrusions into national waters.

“We are at the forefront of an $8 billion opportunity to become the world’s leading provider of actionable, real-time data that can revolutionize how shipping can be managed,” said GSTS co-founder and CEO Richard Kolacz. “And we’re doing it from right here in Atlantic Canada.”

The Atlantic Canada Advantage

GSTS choose Atlantic Canada to launch and grow because of its rich startup ecosystem and global recognition in the Blue Economy. Organizations like the Institute for Big Data Analytics at Dalhousie University and Bedford Institute of Oceanography were important factors in the decision to locate here.

Making a difference on a global scale

The workforce at GSTS peaked at 50-employees during its product development phase and is projected to grow to 250 in the next few years now that the company is taking its product to the global market.

“Our applications have been developed hand-in-hand with our customers,” said Mr. Kolacz. “Now that it has been validated, we’re ready to take it to the rest of the world."

Throughout its history, GSTS has remained committed to pushing the boundaries of what was possible in marine transportation. With growing validation from leading shipping companies, port authorities, and government agencies, GSTS has positioned itself as a trusted ally in the global maritime community.
