Government of Canada Supporting Community Infrastructure in Atlantic Canada

March 3, 2016 - Dartmouth, N.S. - Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA)

The Somme Branch 31 Royal Canadian Legion in Dartmouth is upgrading its facilities. Today, the Government of Canada announced a $25,000 contribution from the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program to support improvements to the building. The Government of Nova Scotia is investing $10,000.

Community facilities across Canada play a critical role in boosting both quality of life and economic activity through community-based partnerships. Many of these facilities are in need of updates and repairs.

The Somme Branch Legion received the support to acquire a new heating system. The system will enable the Legion to better serve residents as it hosts meetings, entertainment and other community events. This project will contribute to the preservation of the Legion as a vital resource for Nova Scotians to commemorate the service of veterans.

     - Darren Fisher, Member of Parliament for Dartmouth-Cole Harbour

“It’s important for Nova Scotians to have access to public spaces where they can foster opportunities to build a sense of community. That’s why the province is working with communities and individuals to enhance key facilities like the Somme Branch 31 of the Royal Canadian Legion.

     - Derek Mombourquette, MLA for Sydney-Whitney Pier, on behalf Municipal Affairs Minister Zach Churchill

“This building has deep roots in this community. As a church hall, it was the heart of this area in the 1920s. As a soup kitchen in the 1930s it nourished the bodies and souls of those in need during the Great Depression. Today, as the Legion, it honours those who have served and gives our community a place to gather to celebrate all of life’s occasions.”
