Federal and provincial governments contributed $4.5 million to the Atlantic Canada Tourism Recovery Initiative

ACOA and the four Atlantic Provinces invested in strategic initiatives and activities to boost local tourism and position the sector for a strong recovery

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, Atlantic Canada’s spectacular landscapes, delicious food and rich cultural experiences attracted millions of visitors every year. With many travel and public health restrictions still in place, the region’s tourism industry is facing a long and challenging road to recovery. That is why the Government of Canada and the four Atlantic Provinces are investing in initiatives to help the industry recover, adapt and move forward.

GOVERNMENT SUPPORT FOR TOURISM INITIATIVE IN ATLANTIC CANADA

The Government of Canada and the four Atlantic Provinces today announced $4.5 million in joint federal and provincial funding for the Atlantic Canada Tourism Recovery Initiative (ACTRI). The Initiative aims to boost local tourism and help the industry prepare for a strong and swift recovery when travel restrictions are lifted.  

Under this Initiative, Tourism Nova Scotia (TNS), the New Brunswick Department of Tourism, Heritage and Culture, Tourism PEI and Heritage & Culture, Hospitality Newfoundland and Labrador (HNL), in partnership with Newfoundland and Labrador Tourism, each received $750,000 in federal funding matched by $375,000 in provincial funding to support their respective province’s unique tourism product offerings and promotional needs. This includes an increased focus on the development of digital campaigns, tools and assets to help businesses expand and amplify their presence in the virtual marketplace.

The Government of Canada and the Atlantic Provinces are working together to support strategic initiatives in each province to encourage Atlantic Canadians, and other travellers when restrictions are lifted, to explore and experience the region. This announcement builds on the continued partnership in the Atlantic Growth Strategy to grow the region’s marketing, product development, and capacity building initiatives to increase the reach of Atlantic Canada’s tourism industry.

Canada’s COVID-19 Economic Response Plan has helped to protect millions of jobs, provide emergency support to families and keep businesses afloat throughout the pandemic.   • Growing tourism is part of the Trade and Investment priority of the Atlantic Growth Strategy.

  • Today’s announcement is in addition to the more than $170 million in emergency relief funding allocated to Atlantic Canadian SMEs and business organizations through the Regional Relief and Recovery Fund (RRRF).

  • With Atlantic Canada’s tourism sector – and industries that rely on it like food service, recreation and entertainment – deeply affected by COVID-19, more than 30 percent of ACOA’s initial share of RRRF investments are supporting tourism-related businesses.

  • ACOA is also delivering $38.1 million of Fisheries and Oceans Canada’s Canadian Seafood Stabilization Fund (CSSF) in Atlantic Canada.

  • ACOA continues to invest in projects that promote sustainable local economic development, enhance business development and growth, and facilitate innovation through its regular suite of programs.
