New state-of-the-art system will allow company to extend operating season

June 9, 2021 · Tor Bay, Nova Scotia · Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA)

Investing in Atlantic Canadian small- and medium-sized businesses to become more competitive and innovative helps to create jobs and grow the economy. That is why the Government of Canada is supporting Tor Bay Fisheries Limited to build a live lobster holding facility that will increase its overall sustainability and extend seasonal employment opportunities.

Government of Canada supports Canso-based fishery

Mike Kelloway, Member of Parliament for Cape Breton-Canso, today announced a repayable contribution of $550,000 to Tor Bay Fisheries to assist with the construction of the lobster holding facility. The announcement was made on behalf of the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Economic Development and Official Languages.

Tor Bay currently holds live lobsters in an open water facility that experiences an increase in water temperatures during summer months. The new live lobster tanks will be temperature controlled, have advanced filtration systems, and will be energy efficient to create the best environment for the lobster. This will allow the company to extend its season, hire more people, explore export opportunities and sell more lobster.

Today’s announcement further demonstrates the Government of Canada’s commitment to help businesses innovate, grow, reach new markets and contribute to Atlantic Canada’s economic recovery.
