June 22, 2023 · Halifax, NS · Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA)

Atlantic Canada’s air transportation industry is building capacity to make the region’s air service network more appealing to domestic and international travellers. Drawing more people to the region brings with it more opportunities to showcase the exceptional tourism, business, and lifestyle opportunities that Atlantic Canada has to offer.

Airports, airlines, tourism professionals as well as provincial and federal government representatives met in Halifax, June 20-22, for the Altitude East 2023 conference, the premiere aviation event in Atlantic Canada. This event provided an opportunity to discuss issues and trends as well as explore new opportunities that will strengthen Atlantic Canada’s booming appeal as a place to prosper, grow and settle, as recently confirmed in the Atlantic Canada Momentum Index.

A strong and competitive air transportation industry is vital for Atlantic Canada’s economy. To that end, the Honourable Ginette Petitpas Taylor, Minister of Official Languages and Minister responsible for ACOA, today announced a non-repayable contribution of $742,500 to the Atlantic Canadian Airports Association.

This project aims to grow passenger and cargo services for Atlantic Canada’s airports by exploring ways to re-establish routes lost during the pandemic, build new routes, and increase the frequency to and from domestic, trans-border and international locations.

The Government of Canada is determined to make investments in initiatives that help accelerate the region’s outstanding momentum, by supporting sectors that enhance Atlantic Canada’s economic resiliency.

“Atlantic Canada’s economy is bustling. We are proud to be supporting activities that help raise the profile of the region as a transportation hub with world class business and tourism opportunities. By coming together at events like Altitude East 2023, leaders in the air transport industry forge relationships, share ideas and make decisions that will have lasting positive impacts on the industry, and our region’s economic wings.”

“Thirteen airports in the region are working together to collaborate on best practices and pool resources with the aim of growing connectivity. With this support, we are working to strengthen our air service network, increase frequency, and grow passenger and cargo services to enhance Atlantic Canada's tourism and business opportunities. The Altitude East 2023 conference is one of the six supported projects and it provides an opportunity to showcase our region to air carrier decision makers and route planners and build relationships.”

Quick facts

  • From 2009 until the pandemic hit, ACOA supported the Atlantic Canada Airports Association’s participation in national and international passenger and cargo air transportation trade shows. The Association’s member airports attended 12 of these tradeshows pre-pandemic, which resulted in new or expanded routes for the region.

  • ACOA’s investment in the Atlantic Canada Airports Association is helping to increase access to research and air service development software, attend six key airline tradeshows, and partner to host the Altitude East 2023 conference. It also supports the objectives of the Atlantic Trade and Investment Growth Strategy:  increasing tourism and immigration; diversifying and growing international markets; and attracting foreign direct investment to the region.

  • The Altitude East 2023 Conference is hosted by the Halifax International Airport Authority in partnership with the Atlantic Canada Airports Association.

  • The Public Policy Forum published The Atlantic Canada Momentum Index, a report that provides insight into data proving positive upward trends and accelerated momentum across key social and economic indicators.
