Atlantic hydrogen industry in the Netherlands to promote region as a leader in the global clean energy transition

May 15, 2024 · Moncton, New Brunswick · Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA)

Atlantic Canada is poised to become a world-leading producer and exporter of clean hydrogen. The region’s experience in energy production, world class energy resources, deep-water ports, and proximity to U.S. and European markets, ideally position it to be a global leader. The region has the competitive advantage to support the global energy transition and the region’s capacities represent new good paying green jobs and clean energy market opportunities for Atlantic Canadians.

This week, 48 of Atlantic Canada’s major project developers, supply chain firms, regional utilities, port officials, industry associations, communities and provincial partners are participating in the World Hydrogen 2024 Summit & Exhibition (World Hydrogen 2024) in Rotterdam, Netherlands. While in Rotterdam, the Atlantic Canadian delegation will showcase to the world the region’s significant assets – in particular, its experience in energy production, access to high and consistent winds, deep-water ports, and proximity to US and European markets, as well as Atlantic Canadian companies' abilities to lead the global transition to clean energy.

As the world’s major markets are moving quickly to fight climate change, retool their economies, and build the net-zero industries of tomorrow, support for the Atlantic Canada delegation to the World Hydrogen Summit further demonstrates the Government of Canada’s commitment to helping Canadians, businesses, and communities adapt, while making life more affordable on the track to net-zero.

Quick facts

  • The World Hydrogen 2024 Summit & Exhibition is taking place May 12-15, 2024. As a global springboard for hydrogen deals and project developments, this event attracts more than 11,500 decision makers, energy ministers, and business leaders from over 100 countries.

  • There are currently eight onshore wind-hydrogen opportunities in the Atlantic region which have reached advanced planning and permitting stages.

  • We have leveraged significant funding from a wide range of partners, including Global Affairs Canada, to support Canada’s presence at the World Hydrogen Summit.

  • Financial support for Energy NL to lead an Atlantic Canadian delegation to the World Hydrogen 2024 Summit & Exhibition in Rotterdam, Netherlands, is provided in part by the Government of Canada and the governments of Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick. ACOA is providing a non-repayable contribution of $286,773 to Energy NL though the Regional Economic Growth through Innovation (REGI) Program to support key program activities including pavilion space at the Summit exhibition, pre-mission company support, in market networking and visits to strategic sites.

  • Global Affairs Canada’s Trade Commissioner Service (TCS) is leading on the Canada Pavilion and Canadian presence at the World Hydrogen Summit. Through working closely with NRCan, ACOA, and other federal and provincial government partners, as well as the private sector, the TCS will:

    • help Canadian companies showcase Canadian strengths to potential international buyers and investors, and win business in this emerging clean fuel sector.
