News release

Inn at Bay Fortune to elevate guest experience with Farmhouse Event Space

June 7, 2024 · Souris, Prince Edward Island · Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA)

Tourism drives economic development and diversification for many communities across Atlantic Canada. At the eastern tip of Prince Edward Island, Michael and Chastity Smith have been building a top culinary destination resort, garnering world-wide attention and visitation to the Island since 2015. That is why the Government of Canada is investing to help The Inn at Bay Fortune continue to build on their reputation for excellence in hospitality.

Investment will support new event space and accommodation upgrades

Today, the Honourable Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food and Member of Parliament for Cardigan, announced a repayable contribution of $220,000 through the Tourism Growth Program (TGP) to The Inn at Bay Fortune. The announcement was made on behalf of the Honourable Gudie Hutchings, Minister of Rural Economic Development and Minister responsible for ACOA.

This investment will support the creation of the Farmhouse Event Space and the modernization of the Tower Room accommodation suites. The new 3,300 square foot event space will function as a fully operational greenhouse, providing fresh sustainable produce year-round, and create an innovative tourism offering integrated into the Inn's farm-to-table gastronomy. The property improvements to existing heritage buildings will enhance guest accommodations to match the high standards of the inn’s culinary experiences.

Today’s announcement further demonstrates the Government of Canada’s commitment to diversifying regional economies by investing in tourism products and experiences that will encourage visitation to and within Canada.

“In Atlantic Canada you will find some of the most incredible tourism experiences in the world. Michael Smith has helped put PEI on the map as a world-class destination for foodies, and we are going to make sure the Island keeps growing that reputation.”

The Honourable Soraya Martinez Ferrada, Minister of Tourism and Minister responsible for the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec

“The Inn at Bay Fortune has been welcoming guests for nearly 10 years, and it’s clear they have no plans to slow down. I’m so pleased that the Government of Canada is making investments in our province that will foster the innovative spirit that Chef Michael and Chastity have in spades. These new additions will enhance The Inn at Bay Fortune's offerings and contribute to our region's economic prosperity.”

“As Farmers, the short growing season was our most significant barrier to growing fresh food for our restaurant. Now, we have a welcoming space for guests and can produce high-volume, diverse, sustainable, culinary-focused plants and vegetables.”
