Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games

After a year-long delay, the Olympic and Paralympic Games are set to take place this summer in Tokyo, Japan. More than 370 Canadian athletes will represent the country at the Olympic Games and more than 125 will do the same at the Paralympic Games.

The Olympic and Paralympic Games are an opportunity for Team Canada athletes to inspire Canadians, especially young Canadians, to stay active through sport. These athletes have demonstrated courage, resilience and perseverance in the lead up to the Games, and they will once again make the whole country proud, and inspire our youth to believe that they can achieve their dreams no matter the circumstances.

The Government of Canada is proud to be the largest single contributor to sport in Canada and has supported Team Canada’s quest for excellence and throughout the pandemic. As part of the Emergency Support Fund for Cultural, Heritage and Sport Organizations, funding was distributed to sport organizations, including National Sport Organizations, Multisport Service Organizations, and Canadian Sport Centres to help athletes prepare for the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games. And through Sport Canada programs, Canadians contribute to the preparation, participation, and celebration of our country’s high-performance athletes before, during and after the Games.

The Government of Canada takes the health and safety of Team Canada very seriously. With the collaboration of Canadian health authorities, we are working with the Canadian Olympic and Paralympic Committees to ensure plans for Team Canada’s participation in the Tokyo Games abide by Canadian and Japanese public health guidelines and COVID-19 protocols.
