Timeline since June 16, 2022 – Hockey Canada update
- On June 16, 2022, the Director General of Sport Canada sent a letter to Hockey Canada to inform the organization about two funding conditions: the organization must submit to a financial audit and share the recommendations from the internal investigation and the plan to implement these recommendations. Funding disbursements and approvals will be held until the conditions are met.
- On June 22, 2022, Minister St-Onge publicly announced that in addition to those two conditions, all federal funding would be frozen until Hockey Canada became a signatory to the Office of the Sport Integrity Commissioner.
- On June 28, 2022, Scotiabank announced that it would pause its sponsorship of Hockey Canada until it was confident that the right steps were taken to improve the culture within the sport.
- From June 28 to June 30, 2022, Tim Hortons, Esso, Canadian Tire and Telus all indicated that they would pull their support of the International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship scheduled to be held in Edmonton in August 2022. Tim Hortons also indicated that it planned to re-evaluate its sponsorship of Hockey Canada.
- On July 1, 2022, Tom Renney retired as Chief Executive Officer and Scott Smith became the Chief Executive Officer and President of Hockey Canada.
- On July 7, 2022, Sport Canada communicated with Scott Smith as new CEO and President of Hockey Canada to reiterate the conditions and expectations associated with Sport Canada funding.
- On July 14, 2022, Hockey Canada released an open letter to Canadians sharing the following steps that it is taking:
- Reopening the investigation into the alleged sexual assault perpetrated by members of the 2018 National Junior Team;
- Requiring all high-performance players, coaches, team staff and volunteers to participate in mandatory sexual violence and consent training;
- Conducting a full governance review of Hockey Canada;
- Committing to becoming a full signatory to the Office of the Sport Integrity Commissioner for complaints, allegations or concerns at the national team level; and
- Creating a new independent and confidential complaint mechanism for any complaints below the national team level.
- On July 15, 2022, Hockey Canada shared with Sport Canada the Henein Hutchison LLP recommendations that were made in the interim report.
