Statement by Minister Duncan on the Raising of the Canadian Flag in the Olympic Village at the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games

Statements

The Honourable Kirsty Duncan, Minister of Science and Minister of Sport and Persons with Disabilities, is accompanied by Her Excellency the Right Honourable Julie Payette, Governor General of Canada, and members of Team Canada at the Canadian flag raising ceremony at the Coastal Olympic Village in PyeongChang

GANGNEUNG, South Korea, February 7, 2018

Today marked an important moment for Team Canada in PyeongChang: the Canadian flag was proudly raised in the Coastal Olympic Village. The Canadian Olympic Team was visibly touched by today’s ceremony, and I was inspired by these high-performance heroes who will compete at these Games with the maple leaf in their hearts, and on their jerseys.

Our athletes are an enormous source of pride for all Canadians, especially our youth. That is why we are proud to provide continued support to Canada’s sport system and the athletes who represent our great country on the world stage.

I encourage everyone to show their pride and cheer on Team Canada with the #WinningFace movement on social media.

On behalf of the Government of Canada and all Canadians, I wish all of these athletes the very best in their competitions. This is an incredible milestone in their careers and a high point in their pursuit of athletic excellence.

Our athletes are an inspiration for all Canadians.
