Statements
PYEONGCHANG, South Korea, February 12, 2018
On behalf of the Government of Canada and all Canadians, I would like to extend my most heartfelt congratulations to Patrick Chan, Tessa Virtue, Scott Moir, Gabrielle Daleman, Kaetlyn Osmond, Eric Radford and Meagan Duhamel on winning Canada’s first gold medal at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games today.
Canada’s figure skating team earned their gold medal in the team event, proving that collectively, Canada can achieve anything. This is Canada’s first gold medal in this Olympic competition and the 7th overall Olympic medal for Canada.
Over the course of three days, Team Canada competed in long and short programs in all four figure skating disciplines against the world's top 10 countries.
Their outstanding performance reminds us that Canada is a leading sport nation, and our government is proud to provide our athletes with the tools they need to reach the podium.
Today, Canadians across our country are filled with pride and admiration at their incredible talent, drive and strength as we celebrate this prestigious moment in their sport career. They are a true inspiration for all Canadians.
I wish our Canadian Olympic Team much more success as competition continues in PyeongChang.
