Statement by Minister Joly on Vesak
Statement
OTTAWA, May 29, 2018
Today, we join Buddhists in Canada and around the world in marking Vesak, the most important of Buddhist festivals.
Vesak is observed in different ways according to various Buddhist traditions, with all celebrations commemorating the birth, enlightenment and passing of the Buddha. It is a time when Buddhists come together to reflect on the universal teachings of the Buddha, including peace, compassion and mutual aid. On this day, let us learn from these values, which unite us as Canadians.
Vesak bears witness to the tremendous richness of our communities. I invite Canadians of all backgrounds to learn more about this sacred holiday. This is an opportunity to show once again how important diversity is to our country. As Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Multiculturalism, I offer my best wishes to everyone celebrating Vesak.
