Statement by Minister Duncan on the Selection of Canada, Mexico and the United States to Host the 2026 FIFA World Cup TM

Statement

GATINEAU, June 13, 2018

Our government is pleased that the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) has selected Canada, Mexico and the United States to co-host the 2026 FIFA World CupTM.

We are excited to have been chosen as host country alongside our North American neighbours. This opportunity will allow the Government of Canada to continue playing a crucial role in the development and success of athletes at an international level. Moreover, this event will potentially provide Canadian athletes the opportunity to play on home soil, allow Canada’s soccer communities to grow and inspire our next generation of athletes.

The Government of Canada will provide up to $5 million to support continued development of event plans and budgets that will inform future decisions around specific funding for the event.

As a proud supporter of the United 2026 bid for the 2026 FIFA World CupTM, the Government of Canada would like to thank and congratulate United 2026 and Canada Soccer for their work to bring this event to North America.

This is an exciting time for Canada and for soccer fans across the country who will be watching and cheering our Canadian athletes.
