Colonel By Statue

The statue of Colonel By stands in Major’s Hill Park, in Ottawa.

Lieutenant Colonel John By (1779–1836) was a British officer and member of the Royal Engineers. In 1826, he received orders to build a canal that would link the Ottawa River to Lake Ontario: the Rideau Canal. He also founded Bytown, now known as Ottawa.

The monument was created by Joseph-Émile Brunet in 1971.
