About the team

The Copyright Policy Branch of the Department of Canadian Heritage is responsible, through its policy-making activities, for ensuring that Canada's copyright policy framework, a cornerstone of cultural policy, supports creativity, innovation and access to cultural works.

To fulfill its mandate, the Branch:

  • Looks at the latest legal and technological developments here in Canada as well as abroad in conducting its research and analysis;
  • Promotes Canada's interests in international fora while ensuring that Canada's copyright regime complies with our international obligations;
  • Promotes access to quality information so that Canadians may better understand and apply the legislation, regulations and processes governing copyright.

The Copyright Policy Branch works in close collaboration with various partners, such as Industry Canada, Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada, and Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada.

The Copyright Policy Branch collaborates with the artists, authors, producers, user groups, interest groups as well as the public.

The Copyright Policy Branch does not provide legal advice or counsel.
