Preventive conservation technical services

We will assess any new requests based on their urgency and the date of receipt so that we can provide services to our clients in a fair manner. Additionally, response times may be delayed.

Please note that the delivery of all in-person or on-site services will depend on Covid-19 restrictions issued by local public health and by the Government of Canada for its employees. These restrictions will also have an impact on travel and on our ability to access CCI facilities, various sites or other buildings.

We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your understanding.

On occasion, a unique preventive conservation challenge may require technical assistance, which could be in the form of

  • advice
  • design considerations for the development of practical solutions
  • technical assessments
  • referrals
  • technical solutions
  • development of tools for a specific application

Staff from the Preservation Services Division may be able to help. Examples of past projects undertaken by staff include:

  • designing adjustable book mounts and specialized display cases
  • performing display case leakage tests
  • carrying out integrated pest management surveys
  • assisting with complex shipping and handling requirements
  • providing solutions for active and passive humidity control

Who can apply?

Our primary clients include museums, archives, libraries and historic sites, whose principal role is to acquire, conserve, exhibit (for the purposes of study, education and enjoyment), disseminate information and conduct research on permanent heritage collections that are accessible to the Canadian public. The majority of expert services provided on-site at CCI are provided to these clients without cost. CCI also delivers expert services and training to public authorities and other organizations in Canada that are responsible for heritage objects or collections, based on partial or full cost recovery.
