Workshop Overview

Gellan gum application

CCI is delighted to partner with the Art Gallery of Ontario in welcoming Simonetta Iannuccelli and Silvia Sotgiu from the Istituto Centrale per il Restauro e la Conservazione del Patrimonio Archivistico e Librario in Rome to present a workshop on applications of Gellan gum to paper conservation. These two instructors have pioneered this technique, and have published and lectured extensively on the topic. A key part of CCI's mandate is to ensure that heritage professionals have the knowledge and skills to properly care for their objects and collections, and we do this, in part, by working with leading experts in the field.

This workshop will show a new cleaning technique based on the use of Gellan gum, developed as an alternative to traditional methods and conceived especially for sensitive paper objects. The main advantage of the technique is one of optimizing the properties of water by controlling the method and timing of solvent transfer to the paper without altering the artifact's original morphological characteristics, that is, the surface texture and printing ink marks.

The first day of the workshop–opened to a larger audience–will be devoted to presentations and practical demonstrations of the technique. We will start with a theoretical presentation in order to introduce the topic and the theoretical premises of the gel method. The presentation will also show the results of chemical and physical analyses conducted to compare the effectiveness and safety of traditional cleaning techniques, such as immersion in water, and the gel method in order to ascertain whether the gel method could be sufficiently effective and, at the same time, be respectful of the historical and aesthetic aspects of the paper. Then we will start the practical work, showing a 'live' demonstration of both preparation and application of the gel on selected paper items. We will also give a second lecture, illustrating several case studies in which Gellan gum has been used to execute lining removals and wet treatments conducted on oversized graphic print works, drawings and architectural plans, carried out with different techniques on both handmade and machine-made paper supports.

On the second and third days of the three-day workshop, the number of participants will be restricted only to those interested in obtaining hands-on experience with the new technique. We will help participants in selecting paper items, planning the treatment sequence and preparing the gels for their application in order to perform cleaning treatments, removal of linings or old repairs, and chemical stabilization treatments, where needed.

Participants of the one-day workshop will receive a bibliography and a copy of all of the papers published on the subject.

Participants of the three-day workshop will receive a bibliography, a copy of all of the papers published on the subject, a technical leaflet (useful as a tutorial), and a sample of Gellan gum (Kelcogel CG-LA).
