Guidelines 800-9 Medical Assistance in Dying

Why was the policy changed

On February 29, 2024, Bill C-62 received royal assent, extending, until March 17, 2027, the ineligibility for Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) in circumstances where a person's sole underlying medical condition is a mental illness.

What has changed

In paragraph 14b, the text stating that “as of March 17, 2024, individuals whose sole underlying medical condition is a mental illness will be eligible for MAID if they meet all the other eligibility requirements” has been removed.

This policy was updated by the Health Services Sector in consultation with the Strategic Policy Division at National Headquarters.

Staff and contractors involved in the MAID process or in providing health care services to individuals requesting MAID.
