Commissioner's update for correctional employees: April 29, 2024

This content is a message to Correctional Service Canada (CSC) staff from CSC's Commissioner.

Our Mission: The Correctional Service of Canada, as part of the criminal justice system and respecting the rule of law, contributes to public safety by actively encouraging and assisting offenders to become law-abiding citizens, while exercising reasonable, safe, secure and humane control.

Yesterday, April 28, was the National Day of Mourning for those who have died, been injured, or suffered illness in the workplace. We have marked this date every year since 1984. It was officially enshrined by Parliament in 1991. Today, it is observed around the world. I encourage everyone to take a moment to remember and honour the lives lost and affected by workplace tragedies and injuries.

I recognize this day of mourning is personally impactful for many of us. Please know there are resources in place to support you, should you need them. If you wish to speak to someone, EAP referral agents (accessible only on the Government of Canada network) are available to listen and help you find appropriate and helpful resources. The Employee Assistance Program (accessible only on the Government of Canada network) can be accessed by all employees, as well as eligible family members, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Values and Ethics

I shared the Deputy Ministers’ Task Team on Values and Ethics Report to the Clerk of the Privy Council earlier this year and I am committed to fostering a positive work environment at CSC. This means having continuous and meaningful dialogue on values and ethics. We have a shared responsibility to create and maintain a healthy workplace for ourselves, our colleagues and the individuals in our care and custody.

Your commitment to demonstrate our values in your day-to-day work is an important part of achieving this. Upholding our CSC values (accessible only on the Government of Canada network), Standards of professional conduct (accessible only on the Government of Canada network), and adhering to Values and Ethics Code for the Public Sector help us to navigate challenges, successfully reach our goals, maintain the public confidence in CSC, and contribute to a resilient organization.

I encourage you to learn more about CSC’s Values and Ethics and different conflicts of interest:

Red Dress Day

Red Dress Day, next Sunday, May 5, marks the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit (MMIWG2S) individuals. The red dress reminds us to remember and reflect on the pain and loss of those individuals. This significant date holds profound cultural and societal significance for all Canadians, with particular importance for Indigenous communities.

I encourage everyone to learn more about MMIWG2S by reading the final report of the National Inquiry:

Faces of CSC

James Murphy

James Murphy is passionate about Citizen Advisory Committees (CACs). During his 38-year career at CSC, he believed in the transformative power of CACs on the federal correctional system. Following his retirement, Jim was honoured with the presentation of the first James A. Murphy Citizen Advisory Committee Award. Since then, the award is given annually to a CAC member who embodies a passion for engaging Canadians in the correctional process. Read his story.

Just a reminder that you can participate in the Movement is Medicine: Walk, Run, or Wheel hybrid event on May 3. It gives federal government employees an opportunity to engage in a walk, run, or wheel at designated locations, or virtually. More information can be found here: Movement is Medicine 2024.

I encourage you to get involved in these community events. Your participation and support are crucial in honouring, supporting, and amplifying the voices of Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQI+ individuals. Together, we can make a difference.

Thank you for your ongoing dedication and hard work. We are a successful organization because of what you do.
