Commissioner's update for correctional employees: January 27, 2025
This content is a message to Correctional Service Canada (CSC) staff from CSC's Commissioner.
Our mission: The Correctional Service of Canada, as part of the criminal justice system and respecting the rule of law, contributes to public safety by actively encouraging and assisting offenders to become law-abiding citizens, while exercising reasonable, safe, secure and humane control.
Our core values: Respect, fairness, professionalism, inclusiveness, and accountability.
As you know, the Offender Management System Modernization Team has been working hard to develop a new Offender Management System (OMS). For many of you, this will be a major change and result in new, more effective ways of working.
The new system will also have a new name that reflects the significant enhancements and new capabilities of our system. As part of the naming process, a list of potential names was developed in workshops consisting of staff from all regions. Last summer, you had the chance to vote.
I want to congratulate the Prairie region for getting the highest number of votes and winning bragging rights! Thank you to all of those who participated. The winning name for your future new OMS is…Atlas!
Visit to Collins Bay Institution
Last week, I was pleased to accompany the Secretary of the Treasury Board, Bill Matthews, and the Comptroller General, Annie Boudreau, on a tour of Collins Bay Institution. I would like to thank the acting Regional Deputy Commissioner, the Warden and the Deputy Wardens for a very informative visit.
Recent seizures of contraband and unauthorized items
As mentioned last week, I will be highlighting recent seizures in my messages to recognize some of the fantastic work our staff are doing to prevent illegal items from entering our institutions.
Between January 12 and 20, our staff seized packages containing contraband and unauthorized items, including marijuana and tobacco at Warkworth Institution, in the Ontario region. The estimated institutional value of items seized is $146,970.
I want to thank the staff involved for their vigilance and great work.
Printing a Brighter Future for Offenders
I encourage you to read one of our most recent articles on Let’s Talk. It takes a look at how offenders are getting hands-on training in a CORCAN printing shop.
Instructors teach offenders a wide variety of printing-related skills that help prepare them for work opportunities in the industry upon release. The workshop also provides printing services to CSC and other government departments.
I am proud to see yet another example of CSC employees helping to change lives.
Family Literacy Day
January 27 is Family Literacy Day. I want to recognize the dedication and efforts of our staff who organize and implement activities and initiatives to support inmates and their families. They work with community supports like the Canadian Families and Corrections Network, Book Clubs for Inmates, and the Canadian Association of Elizabeth Fry Societies to promote literacy and connections with children and families. A shared story, a written letter, or a recorded reading can bridge distances, nurture family bonds, and inspire hope.
Thank you for your continued commitment and hard work.
